Project Description
The third phase of Penn State University’s Intramural Building expansion features a new indoor turf grass field with nearby climbing and bouldering walls, squash courts, and a multi-purpose room intended for fitness classes, including TRX. As with Phase 2, a hybrid ventilation system saves energy by drawing cool outside air across the turf field at occupant level along the prevailing wind side of the building and up along the climbing walls. The hot air is relieved at a roof level daylighting well via large, high performance ceiling fans. Estimated energy savings from these and other features exceed 30%. This $23 million final phase also involved fit-out of the phase 2 basement, which now houses a student wellness and relaxation suite, dedicated table tennis space, a yoga room, laundry area, and office and storage spaces. Reese Hackman provided full electrical, lighting, technology, mechanical, and plumbing engineering services for this 33,245 square foot project, which achieved LEED Silver Certification in March 2018. Phase 3 amenities were opened for student use in August 2017.
