This $2.2 million project was the first of several planned phases to convert the traditional 1970’s college library into a 21st century Learning Commons to reflect the needs of current students. Underutilized suites of offices and workrooms were cleared to make way for an open, informal study area and new café. Group study rooms were created for student collaboration, and charging stations and wireless internet access were added throughout. Touchdown stations and a reconfigured circulation area were added at the main entrance to the library. In addition to the architectural changes, all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems were updated as well. This included replacement of all air handling units, removal of all electric heat and installation of a new gas-fired hot water heating system, replacement of the original pneumatic temperature control system with a new digital system, and replacement of all electrical equipment including switchgear, panelboards, the emergency generator, and lighting throughout.
