The Durango Public Library is a 42,903 square foot library for La Plata County and the City of Durango, Colorado. Replacing an old Durango Public Library building that was nearly 100 years old, the new building was constructed on a Mercy Hospital site which was vacated for this purpose. The two-story library overlooks the Animas River, and rests along side the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This $12.7 million construction project is LEED Gold Certified. Utilizing daylight harvesting throughout, the Durango Public Library includes collection areas, multipurpose rooms, study rooms, a quiet reading room, lounges, and support spaces. Reese Hackman provided the electrical engineering and lighting design services for the new library.
